5 lb Round Challah for Rosh Hashanah

Everyone loves challah, but homemade challah is extra good. Once you make this simple recipe, you will be hooked and you family will never let you bring home store-bought challah again! Challah really is a magical bread, so make a little magic and share it with your family this Rosh Hashanah!

The word challah refers to the mitzvah of separating a piece of the dough before braiding. This dough is set aside as a symbolic contribution to the kohens, the priests of old. In Hebrew this mitzvah is called “hafrashat challah.”

Usually I make my challah into braided loaves, but since this is for Rosh Hashanah, we bake round challah to symbolize the continuity of the New Year. You can fill the challahs with raisins or top them with sesame or poppy seeds. Also, since the round challah is for the New Year, I like to add some honey into the egg wash to add sweetness for the New Year.

  • 5 1/4 tsp salt
  • 5 lbs whole wheat flour
  • 3 large eggs, plus 1 for egg wash
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 4 tbsp yeast
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups plus 3 tbsp sugar
