For seven years now, kosher food giant Manischewitz has hosted a cook-off for home cooks featuring kosher recipes and Manischewitz products.
The company recently announced its 2014 contest, and it should be more competitive than ever, thanks to a new partnership with Saveur magazine and eligibility only for past finalists.
According to rules posted on the website, past finalists from the Manischewitz Cook-Off may submit recipes to the company now through February 12. Grand Prize Winners are not eligible, nor are recipes prepared in past finals. All submitted recipes must include two Manischewitz products, including one Ready to Serve Broth, and can use no more than nine ingredients, including garnish (though water and regular salt and pepper are not counted). All recipes must be kosher, and all must be possible to prepare in an hour or less.
The company will choose four finalists from the recipe entries, with a fifth being chosen by online voting open to the public. The finalists will prepare their dishes at the JCC in Manhattan on March 27, where a winner will be chosen.
The winner will receive a prize package worth an estimated $25,000, including $15,000 in kitchen appliances from Maytag, $1,000 in groceries, and $7,000 from Manischewitz.
Past winning dishes include Faux Pho, “Mod” Matzo Ball Soup, Chicken and Egg Donburi, Mandarin Dumpling Soup, Marvelous Mediterranean Falafel Sliders, and Fantastic Flounder Rolls.
In a press release, Saveur editor Helen Rosner said she was excited to see the finalists working with this brand and these ingredients.
“I grew up with a pantry that was always full of Manischewitz products, and they always remind me of the warmth and comfort of my parents’ cooking,” she said.
