Hanukkah Food Pics Drive Instagram’s Biggest Day Ever

Instagram had its most popular day ever last week, thanks to Thanksgivukkah, the rare confluence of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving. And anyone who has spent even a moment on the popular photo sharing social network knows that much of that traffic is pictures of food, bolstered by two of the most culinary holidays in the Jewish and secular calendars.

In a blog post, Instagram specifically noted that image feeds were “flooded” by “images of turkeys and latkes.”

Instagram photos featuring the Thanksgivukkah tag also show plenty of menorahs, menurkeys (turkey menorahs), pies, cookies, chicken soup, and sufganiyot.

“Your Thanksgiving and Hanukkah-related photos and videos helped make yesterday our busiest day on Instagram so far,” the company wrote.

Several factors probably contributed to last week’s record-setting usage. Use of Instagram has been growing by leaps and bounds since its founding three years ago. Business Insider notes that this is the first holiday season that Instagram video sharing is available.

It’s also worth noting that the last time Thanksgiving and Hanukkah occurred at the same time was 1888; Instagram was unable to take advantage of that holiday, as it would not be founded for 122 years.
